INSPIRING DAILY DEVOTIONAL ® … Don’t kill your enemies
Text(s) for today: Matt. 5:43-48
“But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, if he is thirsty; give him drink; for by so doing, you’ll heap burning coals upon his head. Do not let yourself be overcome by evil, but overcome (master/prevail over) evil with good.” Rom. 12:20-21 AMP.
In the New Testament, do you know how God wants us to relate to our enemies? He actually commands us to love them.
Love is a deep sense of goodwill towards somebody or something.
One of the greatest characteristics of Christian love is that it’s unconditional. What this means is this: it does not matter what the other party does, genuine/true love still stands as strong as ever! In fact, that’s what today’s devotional is all about.
The phrase, ‘you’ll heap burning coals upon his head’ is figurative. It means you’ll give your enemy a burning conscience. His conscience will prick him and he’ll discover how evil he has been. As this pricking continues, you’ll win him over to the LORD. Praise God!
There are many today who pray against their enemies. They wish all manner of evil against their enemies. Some even go to the extent of praying for their death and they buttress their hate with Old Testament scriptures.
Love, as we’ve already said is a deep sense of goodwill towards someone and when we pray for the death of our enemies, inflict them with sicknesses, curses, etc, that’s not goodwill! Those who do that have no biblical backing at all from the New Testament. They have totally relegated to the background the precious words of the Master.
“…Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you (that is those who ill-treat you)… Love ye your enemies, and do good … and your reward shall be great … Be ye therefore merciful as your Father also is merciful.” Lk. 6:27-36.
Have a mindset of love. You’re an offspring of God: God is love, you are also love. Make up your mind not to hate anyone in this life. Remember you’ve only one enemy in this whole world: the devil himself, not his vessels (i.e. those he uses) 1 Pet. 5:8.
Prayer & Confessions (pray out loudly)
Lord I thank you for your great love and genuine concern for me in spite of my frailty. I replicate this same quality of love to all those around me. My heart, mind and soul is full of your love. From today onward, I carry this love every where I go, in Jesus’ matchless name. Amen!
