Text(s) for today: Mk. 13:37; Lk. 21:36; Matt.24:42

“… what I say unto you, I say unto all, watch”. Mk. 13:37 KJV.

You don’t need to be a prophet to be a able to watch. You don’t even need to have any spiritual gift (like word of knowledge prophecy, etc.) for that. Spiritual gifts are important, but like I’ve said, they are not necessities for watching.

As far as you don’t need to be a prophet or do not require a spiritual gift to be able to pray, you also do not need that at all to watch effectively. This is very true and worth-noting. Let’s look at why it is so.

Remember all the people Jesus instructed to watch in the Bible days: the disciples and particularly the multitudes that followed him (Mk. 13:37; Lk. 21:36; Matt. 24:42; 26:38, 41). These folks could not have spiritual gifts because the spirit had not been poured yet (Jn. 7:38-39). The apostles at that time were not matured. In fact they even slept when they were to watch (Read Matt.26:38, 40). The multitudes were also ordinary people (not prophets, evangelists etc.). Remember God will never tell us to do something when he knows very well we can’t do it. When he tells us to do something, He is very much aware we can. Indeed as far as any Christian can pray, we must understand that every Christian can and must watch. Our key verse (above) tells us that Jesus wants everyone (each and every believer) to watch. So you see, watching is not an option for an effective Christian life. Praise God! We turn our attention to the Bible guidelines on watching.

Watching, just like all other spiritual activities demand time. But watching even demands more! Several accounts in the Bible reveals that God deals with us individually. Depending on your maturity, God has the minimum amount of time you have to spend with Him watching. The least time my master expected Peter to watch at one sitting was one hour. When he couldn’t, He was utterly amazed! (Matt. 26:40; Mk. 14:37). God must certainly have a minimum amount of time (varying for person to person) for all other spiritual activities, including even prayer!

Don’t forget watching always comes before prayer (ideally, not after prayer – because watching, as we’ve already seen, guides how you pray and teaches you what you should pray about). Nevertheless, you could watch without following it immediately with prayer.

However you must note that if you want to overcome temptations or challenges to sin , Jesus tells us both watching and prayer are NECESSARY!  (Matt. 26:41).  Only watching can’t solve it; neither can prayer alone. [In fact, that’s why people have been praying for long concerning certain challenges (sexual challenges etc.) and yet see very little or no results].

Watching is very important because Jesus told us to. If people hear this and practice it, they’ll never struggle a single day in their lives with issues of sin. Several people are practicing it and it is yielding amazing results for them. They’ll never succumb to challenges of sin any more. Evil habits (even those of worst kind) and every kind of thing they call addiction (be it pornography, masturbation, fornication, drunkenness, etc) will flee. Sin will no longer have dominion (sin shall not gain mastery or prevail) over you. (Rom. 6:14KJV). That’s the mind of God for each and every child of God (Matt. 5:48; Eph. 4:11 – 13; 2 Cor. 13:9; Col. 1:28). The Word works! (Isa. 55:10-11). Praise God!

We conclude this series RIGHT HERE tomorrow God willing.
