guard your heart

Text(s) for today: Mk. 7:18-23

“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit,  lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these evil things come from within, and defile the man” Mk.7:21-23.

From the key scripture above, we understand that before someone thinks wrong thought, commits adultery etc, the heart has already conceived it. All evil thought originates from the heart –that’s the starting point! If something can enter your heart, very soon it’d dictate the way you think and if it dictates the way you think, that would determine how your life would be (Prov.23:7) so you see, it’s a chain. That’s why the Bible admonishes us:

“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Prov.4:23 NLT.

Because your heart is where everything starts – from a truly righteous successful life, an evil unrighteous life of failure to every thing in-between – you have to guard your heart far above the way homes are guarded with security gadget.

“Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life ‘starts’.  Prov 4:23 MSG.

Don’t be deceived:  what you watch, what you read, what you listen to- these are the thing that enter your heart.

As a Christian, you shouldn’t watch just any thing on TV or on the internet. You shouldn’t watch every movie. You should avoid violent sports like wrestling. You shouldn’t listen to every conversation around you or to every chat. Some books you should never read as Christian. Bible says you should ‘guard your heart above all else’  (that is, with all diligence, see KJV- with all seriousness and all efforts you can EVER marshal).

That means that when you’re browsing TV channels and you happen to pounce on something filthy, quickly change the channel. When on-line and you happen to see an ‘unchristian’ image, quickly leave the page. If you switch on the radio and you hear false teacher or a false prophet preaching, flee from the hearing range of the radio or block your ears.

The measures cited above may sound quite drastic especially to the novice but they’re the least you could ever do! Don’t forget your heart is more important than whatever thing you may be doing over the internet or on TV.
